Epigenetics refers to the environmental factors (eg. Food, hormones, stress) that play a part in affecting our genes.

Therefore the nutritional value of the mother’s diet during pregnancy influences the activity of the genes of the baby.

In choosing a supplement, it is important to account for nutrient absorption and the effect it has on the body.

Synthetic Vitamins versus Natural Nutrients

Scientists have learned in recent years that the group of phytonutrients we find in plants are much more effective than just one single synthetic substance isolated from it.

Folic Acid/Folates

Folic acid has been recommended as a supplement for pregnancy for a long time. One of the most common malformation in foetus is the spine (spina bifida) and that is a consequence of a lack of folic acid. That is why it is recommended to start on folic acid even before conception – ideally at least six or eight weeks before conception.

However, folic acid is just one part of the natural nutrient folates, therefore synthetic supplements are less effective than natural ones. Babys Best Formula® uses natural, plant-based folates that provides the complete range of nutrients.

Omega-3

Omega 3 fatty acids are found mainly in deep sea fish such as salmon, tuna and herring. For our body to absorb sufficient omega 3 fatty acids, we would have to eat them 3 times a week, which most of us do not achieve in our usual diet. It is especially difficult for pregnant women, for their change in taste palate may cause rejection or nausea.

Thus, supplementation of Omega 3 fatty acids is important. However, omega 3 derived from fish oil is now under scrutiny, as the fishes are tested to contain heavy metals, and may cause potential health issues. Babys Best Formula® obtains Omega 3 fatty acids from algae, which is just as effective, but without heavy metal contamination. This also enables the growing number of vegans who do not consume fish or fish oil to obtain their much needed omega 3 fatty acids.
